Age-appropriate play: 5v5 for U6 and U8, and 7v7 for U10 and U12.
Game plan preview. The formats are 5v5 for U6/U8 and 7v7 for U10/U12. The rule summaries below use the official Fall 2026 Soccer Shootout rulebook as a reference. The rulebook places U6/U8 5v5 on a quarter of the 7v7 field under the same rules. Final Cup adoption, schedule and any local adaptations will be confirmed before kickoff. This does not establish rules for the separate Spring rec-team tournament.
Format by age group
U6 and U8 play 5v5. U10 and U12 play 7v7. These are on-field formats, not roster limits. The 7v7 reference uses six field players and a goalkeeper; final age-specific roster and minimum-player requirements will be published with the event rules.
7v7 · 22 + 22 minutes
Two 22-minute halves with a five-minute halftime. The clock never stops, including for injuries, unsafe conditions and discipline. The referee may add time at the end of a half. Abandoned games receive a makeup date; the league director decides whether to resume or replay. No team timeouts.
7v7 · Keep players involved
Unlimited rolling substitutions and reentry through the team’s marked substitution zone. The outgoing player must leave fully before the replacement enters. Goalkeeper changes wait for a stoppage and referee notification.
7v7 · Every result counts
Pool-play ties stand. A tied knockout game goes straight to paired five-second running shootouts, with no overtime. Both teams take an attempt in each round before a winner is decided.
7v7 · Use the whole field
This rulebook has no offside and no required build-out line. Goalkeepers have six seconds to release a ball controlled in their hands. Punts and drop kicks are not allowed.
7v7 · Play fairly
A slide tackle with opponent contact results in a direct free kick, or a penalty kick inside the tackler’s own penalty area. A slide at an opponent without contact results in an indirect free kick. A safe slide to a free ball is allowed. The sixth and each later direct-kick team foul in a half brings a running shootout; a foul inside the defending penalty area brings a penalty kick instead. Counts reset at halftime.
Restarts and goalkeeper play
Use kick-ins only at the sidelines, with the ball stationary on the line and opponents five yards away. The kicker has five seconds once the ball is set; a late or improper kick-in goes to the other team. A kick-in cannot score directly: award an opponent goal kick for a ball entering the opponent’s goal, or an opponent corner kick for an own-goal entry. The kicker may not touch it again until another player does. Opponents stay six yards away for kickoffs, corners and free kicks. A kickoff cannot score directly: award an opponent goal kick for an opponent-goal entry, or an opponent corner kick for an own-goal entry. For goal kicks, opponents stay outside the penalty area until the ball is kicked and clearly moves.
Goalkeepers can handle the ball only inside their own penalty area. They cannot handle a deliberate teammate back-pass, a teammate’s kick-in or their own release before another player touches it. Technical goalkeeper violations lead to an indirect free kick from the front edge of the penalty area.
The five-second running shootout
One shooter. One goalkeeper. Five seconds from the referee’s whistle to score. The shooter may dribble and shoot; the goalkeeper may leave the goal line after the first touch. Rebounds may be played within those five seconds. The attempt ends on a goal, time expiring, the ball going out or clear goalkeeper control.
In a tied knockout game, each team gets one attempt per round. If both score or both miss, another paired round follows. Eligible players must each take an attempt before anyone repeats. Accumulated-foul shootouts can also happen during pool and knockout games; the game clock keeps running and the referee may add the time used at the end of the half. A goal leads to a kickoff, a miss to a defending goal kick.
Ready for game day
Wear your numbered team jersey, shorts, socks and shin guards covered by the socks. Remove jewelry. Casts and splints must be padded and referee-approved. Goalkeepers wear a clearly different jersey. For a color clash, the home team reverses its reversible jerseys or wears alternate jerseys. Substitutes do not use pinnies. Use safe soccer footwear suited to the outdoor surface.
Use size 3 for U6, size 4 for U8 through U12, and size 5 for U13 and older. U6 and U8 play 5v5 on a quarter of the 7v7 field under the same rules; U10 and older play 7v7. Game rosters are due at least 15 minutes before kickoff. The 7v7 rulebook permits up to 20 eligible players dressed. This is a reference limit, not the confirmed Cup roster size; final roster arrangements will be published for each division.
The league youth rule prohibits deliberate heading in divisions age 12 and younger. Referees protect players, control the game and can stop play for unsafe conditions. Players, coaches and spectators must treat officials and one another respectfully.
Cards and field setup
A yellow card means a two-minute playing-clock sit-out; an eligible substitute may replace the player immediately. A red-carded player cannot return. An on-field red card leaves the team short for two playing-clock minutes before an eligible substitute may enter. A second yellow becomes a red.
The rulebook's outdoor plan uses fields 40 yards wide by 53 1/3 yards long, with secured goals 18 feet wide by 6 feet high. Two fields fit across a football field with a shared corridor. Keep at least three yards of unobstructed clearance outside every soccer boundary, plus additional space for nets behind goals. The tournament venue and final setup remain to be confirmed.

U6 and U8 use 5v5; U10 and U12 use 7v7. The proposed pool/knockout structure uses four-team flights, subject to enrollment. Roster sizes and final division arrangements will be published with event details. Coaches use a private balanced snake draft, considering experience, age and positions.

The proposed U10/U12 7v7 reference uses two 22-minute halves with a five-minute halftime and a referee-controlled running clock. U6/U8 5v5 game lengths and adaptations will be confirmed separately. Rolling substitutions and reentry are unlimited. The final event schedule will allow for rest and any knockout shootouts. Blueprint Certified coaches complete the course and background check.
7v7 · Seeding + ties
Three points for a win, one for a draw. Two-team head-to-head, goal difference capped at three per match, fewest conceded, then a PSS draw. Pool draws stand; knockout ties use paired five-second running shootouts, with no overtime. Both teams attempt in each round before a winner is decided. U6/U8 tiebreak procedures will be confirmed in the 5v5 event rules.
Existing-team event recommendation: pool play followed by advancement. Recreational eligibility, check-in, roster rules and competition format will be published separately. Check final age-specific rules and the schedule before booking.
